Sequoyah is probably the best known Cherokee in history and one of the most brilliant minds of the 19th century. Born George Guess of a white father and Cherokee mother, he could not read, write nor speak English. He did however understand the importance of the written word. Sequoyah created the Cherokee Syllabry & by doing so was the single greatest influence on Cherokee history. There is a link at the bottom of this page to the Cherokee Syllabry.
