Original Acrylic on canvas with Handmade Paper

Sequoyah was one of the greatest Americans. The most influential of all Cherokees and the only person to create a written language for an aboriginal people.  Born to a Cherokee mother and a white father, his English name was George Guess.  With no other knowledge than white people communicated with a written word, Sequoyah created a symbol for each sound in the Cherokee language.  Within a very short time nearly everyone in the Cherokee Nation could read and write their own language.
